The Republic of China (ROC) competed as Chinese Taipei at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California. It was the first time the nation had competed under that name; previously it had competed in the Olympic Games as the "Republic of China".

The change in name was a result of the Nagoya Resolution, adopted by the International Olympic Committee in 1979 due to objections by the People's Republic of China (PRC) over the political status of Taiwan. Objections over the name of the ROC had led it to boycott the 1976 and 1980 Games, while the PRC had also boycotted the Olympics since its founding in 1949.

38 competitors, 31 men and 7 women, took part in 40 events in 12 sports.[1] In weightlifting, athletes from the Chinese Taipei and People's Republic of China won medals at the same event.
