The main architect was Corzo Castella Carballo Thompson Salman (CT3S)[1]. The school is named for the community it serves, Doral, and was opened in 2001.
The school contains 82,837 square feet (7,695.8 m2) of classroom, office, and computer lab space. The school has four basketball courts, a 500 seat theater/auditorium complex, a 407 seat indoor air-conditioned cafeteria, and a sports complex which includes a weight and fitness training facility, with boys and girls personal fitness locker rooms. There is an agriscience greenhouse with gardens adjacent to the rear of the school and a lake.The Agriscience Program houses chickens, goats, rabbits, pheasants, geese, Ducks, call ducks, a snake, a leopard gecko, and fish. The students in this program compete in the Miami Dade County Youth Fair and other competitions. The students in the ag (agriscience) program have one prizes from 1st to 3rd place, also they have won Grand champion and grand champion reserve at the youth fair. The students in this program learn everything from how to inject a goat with de-wormer to how to properly maintain a garden. There has been dissections that have been done. also all the first aid treatments and care for the animals is done by the students, it is really a hands on experience.Doral MIddle schools also has a Family and consumer sciences program. students don't just cook in that Class!! they learn many skills that will be later used in life. Like leadership skills, how to be a good and contributing citizen, cleaning skills, housework skills, money management, and more.The students also sow in this class and they do lots of community service. Students do compete in a vast variety of competitions for this class.The media center houses a closed-circuit television system and over 25 computer stations. Doral also has four computer labs.
During the 2005-2006 academic school year, Doral Middle School housed ninth grade students, in addition to its sixth to eight grade student body, from the not-yet opened (at the time) Ronald W. Reagan/Doral Senior High School.
As of September 2011, the school grounds are being operated jointly by Ronald W. Reagan/Doral Senior High School and John I. Smith Elementary School (JIS) in order to alleviate the former's overcrowding issues (which resulted in a potential lawsuit) and begin the latter's conversion into a Kindergarten-Eighth Grade Center. Seventh and Eighth grade students at the school have been absorbed by John I. Smith and Reagan/Doral is utilizing the campus as an annex for its Ninth grade students. Faculty and staff formerly employed to work at Doral Middle School have been liquidated, replaced by staff from the aforementioned schools for the time being
