North Miami Senior High School opened as Edward L. Constans Junior-Senior High School in 1951, with 1,500 students in 7th, 8th and 9th grades. Another grade was added each year for the next three years. The class of 1955 was the first graduating class. Early in 1955 the name of the school was changed to North Miami Senior High School.[1] In the fall of 1955 the 7th, 8th and 9th grades were moved to the new North Miami Junior High School.

International Baccalaureate
Since January 1990, North Miami has offered the IB program.
The International Baccalaureate (IB), formerly the International Baccalaureate Organization (the name and logo were changed in 2007) is an international non-profit educational foundation, founded in 1968 in Geneva, Switzerland. The organization administers three programmes for elementary, middle, and high schools which provide the schools with an international curriculum intended to be acceptable to universities around the world.
Student body
81% of the students are Black (with a large majority being of Caribbean ancestry), 15% are Hispanic, 2% are Caucasian, and 2% are Asian.
- 47% of the students in the school participate in the free or reduced-price lunch program.
- The attendance rate of the school is 90% compared to the state average of 94%.
The future
The City of North Miami and the Miami-Dade County School Board have agreed to build a new North Miami High School on the grounds of North Miami Middle School and build a new North Miami Middle on the grounds of North Miami High. Construction has already begun on the New North Miami Senior High School. It should be ready for the 2009-2010 school year. The K-8 replacing North Miami Middle will be ready for the 2008-2009 school year.
Band
NMSH hase a superior band, the band director is Mr. David R. Hines.[citation needed] North Miami's Auxiliary was awarded an Excellent rating. Auxiliary captains include Kemy Napoleon, Davetra Fleary, Ngozi and Kimbrianna. The flagettes have two flag captains. The sponsor is Vedra Roker.
