Overview

American was opened in 1976 and was named so because this was the year of America's bicentennial. Its mascot and colors were chosen to reflect this. The school uses a Hialeah address but mainly serves northern Miami Lakes, including Palm Springs North and The Country Club of Miami.

American's main athletic rival is Barabara Goleman High School. Other rivalschools include, Hialeah-Miami Lakes High School, Miami Carol City High School, Hialeah High School and Miramar High School.

In 2006 The Girls Varsity Softball Team, The Boys Bowling Team & the Boys Soccer Team all won District Championships.

American's student population is one of the most diverse in the district. Accommodating both high income and low income families. American's student population is 84% Hispanic, 11% Black, 2% White, and 1% of Asian descent. 47% of the students receive free or reduced priced lunch. The district average is 44%.

American is composed of 3 buildings. The main building which houses most of the classrooms, and the buildings which house the freshman class in order for there to be enough room for the rest of the student body in the main building.

Although American was a bad school, for the 2007-2008 school year, American was ranked in the top 50 of high schools in the nation by Newsweek Magazine. American was also ranked in the top 50 for the 2006-2007 school year. American has also received the Golden School award five years in a row. American has received a B so far this year, and is extremely close in receiving an A. If the students do well on the FCAT an A is guarenteed.
