Mater Academy Charter School is located in Hialeah Gardens, Florida. Principal Judith C. Marty opened the school in 2003 and has been since been praised as one of the best charter school principles in America. Mater Academy has won numerous awards, including the Silver Medal from "US News and World Report's America's Best High Schools" and College Board's 2011 Inspiration Award.

In the 2008-2009 school year, the Middle, High, and Performing Arts and Entertainment Academy divisions all received an "A" rating in the state's FCAT examination, making it one of the best schools in the state and acting business.[1]

The Mater Arts and Entertainment Academy division emphasizes career seeking students.[citation needed]

As of June 6, 2008, work has started to replace the band room, athletics department and the white tent area with a 3 story building to serve for the same purpose.[citation needed]

In the beginning of 2007, Mater Academy Charter School completed a separate three-floor building called the Mater Annex, sometimes called "The New Building". It consists of a multi-purpose auditorium and larger classrooms. Classes such as Guitar, Chorus, Keyboard, Civics, U.S. History, Pre-Algebra, and Reading are held there. This building is also where the Mater Performing Arts and Entertainment Academy is housed.

Since June 6, 2008, work has started to replace the band room, athletics department and the white tent area with a 3 story building to serve for the same purpose. Extra class rooms and a permanent roof are the prominent changes to the area. The building has finished just in time to start the school year of 2009-2010.

Recognitions

Best High Schools 2008 by U.S. News & World Report analyzed academic, enrollment data from more than 18,000 public high schools to find the very best across the country. These top schools were placed into gold, silver, or bronze medal categories with Mater Academy begin placed in the "Silver Medal" category.[2]
