It is one of two Catholic high schools that serve the students of Vanderburgh, Posey, Gibson, and Warrick counties as part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Evansville.
Mater Dei was constructed in 1949 on the west side of Evansville, Indiana as a Catholic, coed, high school. It is in Vanderburgh county, Indiana.
Mater Dei is a college prep school. There is a wide array of extracurricular programs including but not limited to: athletics, theater, music, speech, dance cats, and numerous other clubs and organizations. Mater Dei offers a well-rounded college prep curriculum emphasizing the natural sciences, career skills, technology, and competence in math and English.

Music
The Mater Dei Marching Wildcats received 8th place in the Indiana State Marching Finals in 2006 and 5th place in the 2007 State Marching Finals under the direction of Timothy Dickel. In 2010, The Marching Wildcats, under the direction of Alex Smith, received 4th Place in the Class D ISSMA State Marching Band Finals.
SAE Supermileage Competition
The team from Mater Dei High School achieved the winning mileage of the 2008 competition in the high school division (1716 miles per US gallon (0.1371 l/100 km)). Mater Dei also captured first place in the 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007 competitions.
