high school in Bloomington,Indiana . The school currently uses a schedule consisting of three 12-week trimesters. Each class period is 67 minutes long, except on Wednesdays when SRT (Student Resource Time, essentially a homeroom) shortens classes (excluding third period, during which lunch takes place) to 49 minutes.The mission of Bloomington High School South is:
Bloomington High School South strives to provide a learning environment that nurtures academic, personal and social growth. Together, we work to create, promote and demonstrate decency, integrity, fairness and civic responsibility in an atmosphere of equity and respect. As productive citizens we lead by example and work to instill a desire to pursue life-long learning in order to make responsible decisions in our school and community.
To graduate from BHSS, a student must attend a minimum of 11 trimesters and earn at least 42 credits as shown below. Students who complete a minimum of 47 credits in specified courses and maintain at least 3.0 GPA may also earn Indiana's Academic Honors Diploma.
For the fall of
2008 , South and North will have another high school component inMCCSC ,New Tech High School . The principal of New Tech will be Alan Veach, current South assistant principal. It will be housed in a former building supply company building.A wide range of extracurricular activities are available to students. Academically, students can participate in Academic Decathlon, Academic Super Bowl, Art Club, Environmental Club, Science Olympiad, Student Council, National Honor Society, JETS, Black Culture Club, Business Professionals of America and Math League, among other activities.
A full range of athletic teams are also available including golf, soccer, cross country, track, tennis, basketball, swimming, diving, volleyball, football, softball and baseball. Many athletic teams have achieved state and national recognition, including 1999's football team, which won the ISHAA state competition and featured
Rex Grossman as quarterback, now playing for theChicago Bears .Ini addition to academic and athletic offerings, Bloomington High School South is also known for its competitive show choir, Sounds of South, and its marching band, the Panther Regiment.
Current News
During the beginning of the 2008-2009 year South lost one of its teachers, Mrs. Elena Veach, who passed away during complications during childbirth.
Currently the English department is debating the merits of students using Wikipedia as a source in academic papers. The consensus so far has been that, while Wikis have their place, they are not credible sources for academic papers. They are also discussing the use of technologies, such as wikis, and their place in the curriculum.
