History

Mondi has its roots in South Africa where, in 1967, the company's former owner, Anglo American plc, built the Merebank Mill in Durban. In the early 1990s Mondi started its business in Europe (Austria, UK, France, Russia, Poland, Hungary, Denmark, the Netherlands, Bulgaria and Italy). In those countries many major companies became part of Mondi.

In 2000 the Company increased its holdings in Neusiedler AG and Frantschach AG, both Austrian businesses, to 100% and 70% respectively.[3] Also in 2000 it acquired Cofinec, another Polish business.[3] It increased its holding in the Syktyvar Mill in the Komi Republic to 90% in 2002.[4]

In 2004 it further increased its holdings in Frantschach AG, one of its Austrian businesses, to 100% and in Celuloza Świecie AG, another Polish business, to 71%.[3]

On 2 July 2007 the Company demerged from its former parent company Anglo American plc, turning into a dual-listed company with primary listings in both Johannesburg and London reflecting the fact that while the majority of the Company's business is in Europe it also has a South African heritage and significant ongoing operations there.[5]

Corporate Structure

The Mondi Group consists of two main divisions: Europe & International and South Africa.

Products

Mondi produces uncoated fine paper, corrugated products as well as bags and specialties and serves diverse industries. Uncoated Fine Paper includes office and printing paper as well as paper for the pre- and offset printing segments.

Containerboard, both virgin and recycled, and corrugated packaging solutions (shelf-ready and heavy-duty packaging, trays and boxes) are used for diverse industrial applications including the food sector. Mondi converts kraft paper into bags and specialty products for rugged industrial applications. These bags are compatible with high-speed filling and used primarily in the cement and construction industries. Bags and microwaveable packaging are produced of film-based flexible packaging. Special technologies, such as extrusion coating, laminating, siliconising and printing facilitate other uses and applications.

Sustainability

In the field sustainability as well as in economic and ecological activities Mondi participates in the survey of Ethical Investment and is represented in the following indices: FTSE4Good Index and the JSE Socially Responsible Investment.[6]

The company recognizes human rights and engages in active health and safety management at the workplace and in people development. Mondi is a signatory and advocate of the Global Compact, a UN initiative for business committed to universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labor, environment and anti-corruption. [7]

The forests that are owned, leased and managed by Mondi are certified according to the standards of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). The majority of the wood and fibre procured from external suppliers is FSC or PEFC-certified (PEFC: Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification).

Practically all the company's products are fundamentally sustainable. Consisting of natural fibres and produced with renewable resources, they are compatible with recovery and recycling regimes. Standardized parameters are applied continuously to monitor the environmental impact of the production processes. Mondi defined its product responsibility on the basis of the UNEP Life Cycle Initiative. [8]
