Nauvoo is a town in Walker and Winston counties in the U.S. state of Alabama. As of the 2000 census, the population of the town is 284. Camp McDowell, an Episcopalian church camp, is located nearby.

History

Nauvoo was founded in 1888, during the construction of the Northern Alabama Railway, and was formerly a center of coal mining. Originally known as Ingle Mills, it was renamed by resident Tom Carroll for unknown reasons in honor of Nauvoo, Illinois, a city founded by Mormon prophet Joseph Smith in 1839.[1]

Nauvoo is located at 33°59′19″N 87°29′16″W / 33.988571°N 87.487814°W / 33.988571; -87.487814.[2]

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.0 square mile (2.6 km2), all land.

Demographics

As of the census[3] of 2000, there were 284 people, 116 households, and 83 families residing in the town. The population density was 289.3 people per square mile (111.9/km²). There were 150 housing units at an average density of 152.8 per square mile (59.1/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.24% White, 1.06% from other races, and 0.70% from two or more races. 1.76% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 116 households out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.3% were married couples living together, 9.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.6% were non-families. 27.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.93.

In the town the population was spread out with 24.6% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.9% from 45 to 64, and 16.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 89.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.4 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $22,274, and the median income for a family was $29,167. Males had a median income of $24,375 versus $16,875 for females. The per capita income for the town was $11,066. About 20.7% of families and 24.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 35.1% of those under the age of eighteen and 22.2% of those sixty five or over.
