It is situated at 28°47′2″S 51°36′36″W / 28.78389°S 51.61°W, at an altitude of 662 meters. Its population estimate in 2004 was of 20,021 inhabitants. It occupies an area of 259.15 km².

Historical
Initially the territory of Nova Prata was an integral part of the city of Alfredo Keys, which is today Veranópolis. Situated in the Colonial Microregion of the High Taquari, located in northeast, distant Superior Encosta 186 km of the capital of Porto Alegre, in an altitude of 820m, conserve its more authentic characteristics: the colonial properties, linguajar and the inherited customs of Italian immigration mainly; Pole, German, Portuguese and others in lesser number.
City Headquarters is Alfredo Keys (today Veranópolis). Date of Emancipation: 11 August 1924 Population in the Emancipation: 9,391 inhabitants, who formed 1,276 families
Nova Prata is bound by: Guabijú and Andres of Rocha on the north, Vila Flores and Fagundes Varela on the south, Nova Bassano, Nova Araçá and Vista Alegre do Prata on the west, and Protásio Alves on the east.With a population estimate of 22,257 (IBGE/2007) inhabitants, since early the agricultural activity if it united with the vegetal extrativismo, consubstanciado in the exploration of ervais and wood, this last one approximately became it main activity of the region until the decade of 60. Demographics
Nova Prata, currently, with about 21,000 inhabitants[citation needed], is constituted of descendants of the following immigrant peoples: Italians - 65%, Poles - 10%, Germans - 5%, Portuguese and others - 20%.
Nova Prata has diversified, thanks to Italian, Polish, and German immigrants, as well as Arab, Portuguese, and African immigrants. They, and their descendants, make up its strong cultural identity. While there is a marked Italian heritage, the local culture also reflects other origins. The Italian colonist cultivated its beautiful songs, its customs, the mediterranean cuisine, bocha and the letters. These traditions still are found in Nova Prata in its more genuine and pure form. To discover and to develop the evidences of the cultural profiles of each etnia will signal prominence and auto affirmation for the people of this city.
Tourism
With a population of approximately 21,000 inhabitants, Nova Prata is known as Capital National of the Basalt, for possessing over 100 quarries.
It is here that the 'Municipal Forest of the Cascade of the Plant' meets the 'Hidrotermal Complex Caldas de Prata', whose waters possess excellent medicinal and therapeutical properties due to its temperature of 41°C. As Capital of the Basalt, Nova Prata periodically hosts the National Party of the Basalt, where the multiple uses of this rock are presented. It can be sanded down into pisos, walls, and beautiful works of art: basalt panels are placed in the entrances of the city to enchant visitors with the art and message that the history of the immigrants of the region counts. It is a perfect union of nature and human creativity in the service of well-being, health, and leisure. The complex of thermal waters Caldas de Prata and the Cascade of the Plant are an invitation for tourist of all the ages.
Its polo industrial counts on industries as Rubber Vipal S/A, Yoki Foods, industries of furniture, staple fibres.
