Alegrete is a
town and amunicipality inRio Grande do Sul located in southernBrazil . Its medium altitude is 102 m. Its estimated population in2004 was 87,236 inhabitants and the total area is 7,804 km² (the largestmunicipality of theState ). Its inhabitants are called "Alegretenses". Alegrete was founded in1857 and is the hometown of politician, diplomat, statesman and President of theUnited Nations (1947 )Oswaldo Aranha and the great Brazilian poetMário Quintana . It is considered the most "gaúcha" (seegaucho ) of the cities in the world. Every September 20 (Gaucho's Day), about 8,000 young, adult and old horsemen and horsewomen parade proudly through its streets, using their nativecostumes and riding theirhorses with the richest trappings.
