Popular culture

The critically acclaimed 2003 independent film The Station Agent was set and filmed largely in Newfoundland. The iconic train station featured in the film is located in the West Milford portion of Newfoundland.

A common mistake by many even those who have lived near Newfoundland NJ for a long time is that the train station on the New York, Susquehanna and Western Railway is located in the West Milford part of Newfoundland when in fact it is in the Jefferson Township part at the Green Pond Road railroad grade crossing; the postal service area of Newfoundland takes in parts of 3 sprawling municipalities in two counties: West Milford Township of Passaic County and the Morris County Townships of Jefferson and Rockaway; one historial fact is that the path NJ Route 23 was originally built in the early 1800's as the Paterson and Hamburg Turnpike; another historical fact is that the world's first long distance oil pipeline from Olean NY to Bayonne NJ built by John D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil utilized the railroad right of way from that train station in Newfoundland to Midland Park In Bergen County at one time.
