Darende

Darende is a district of Malatya Province of Turkey. The mayor is İsa Özkan (AKP).

Darende is in Malatya. Darende is a city that is a centre of science and culture, on the ancient silk road. The city center of the charm on the East Anatolia Region is a statue of door which is the entrance of city Malatya. The largest district of Malatya is Darende. Darende is located in the west of the city and region, again placed on the trade route that is on the upper part of Euphrate (Firat) and on the valley of Tohma that ancient caravans passed. The district, placed on the road between Ankara and Istanbul have borders by west of Hekimhan and South of Akçadağ and southern west of Gürün, and North of Kuluncak and Kangal. It has 1540m2 area. Darende

History

Tohma River flows in Darende adundants (badword) the land. In 1934, it was one of the districts of Sivas, but because of cultural, climatic and regional similarities, Darende became one of the districts of Malatya. The city sustained its popularity in the First period of Turkish Republic.

Balaban, Aşaği Ulupinar, Yenice, Ayvali, Ilica and Ağilbaşi towns, and there are 44 villages in Darende. It was called as Timelkie, Tiranda, Tiryandafil and Derindere in history and at present it is called as Darende. Darende has been the centre of culture and trade for ages. The Zengibar Castle is the symbol of district. It is one of the interesting castles of Turkey that is built on rocks. The castle was built in age of Hittite and Urartu civilization. The castle has an entrance gate, King’s house and remnants of king’s grave and it carries these beauties to our century. Our great flag is endulated (badword) in the blue sky . There are three graves of Sahabe and they are on the field of “HU DEDE” which is on the slopes of castle. Darende had been conquered from Halid Bin Velid whose army hadn’t been defeated in any time and since then it has been centre of belief and culture. Seyyid Abdurrahman Gazi had been martyred on this land while he was a soldier of Holy Army to Conquest of Istanbul.

Hasan gazi (who was uncle and father in law of Seyyid Battal Gazi ) died while serving for Ottoman State and Islam. So he is buried on the hill that now bears his name. The tomb of Hasan Gazi which reminds Huseyin’s holiness on Karbala attracts visitors' interest.

Those who died for Islam show deed to all humanity all over the world. Such as Namik Bey Residence carries the evidence of life in past and present. Hasan paşa bath and Yusuf paşa bazaar are the Gates which open to past times.

Abdurrahman Erzincani mosque and its complex is a much frequented place that visited. Its historical bridges, Ozan monument, Danabey Masjid, Great mosque, Mehmet Paşa Mosque complex, Ibrahim paşa Mosque and the minarets that their mosques were ruined represent the history of the district. Directorate general of foundations will restore the minarets. DGOF is going to finish the construction project in a short time. Darende is not only rich historically but popular and rich in tourism. There are historical beauties such as Aslantaşlar(Lion Stones) 20 km away from Darende that on the northern of district should be seen.

Two rocks that could not be known their date meet you when you go there. (Divriği, Gürün,Eğin, Arapgir and Darende)

According to rumours these statues of lions were pieces of a temple in ancient times. Their faces look at the side sun rises. Koca Ragip Paşa tell us this popularity with his idiom. ”One can not be from those five districts.”

Five Clean Districts are: Again this idiom has been told by men for years. Darende, superior and one of these districts is a land of saints and dervishes.

Moral Worths

One of this Moral Worths is Seyh Hamid-i Veli known as Somuncu Baba and Osman Hulusi efendi was a Saint of Darende and grandchild of somuncu baba. Two of these saints whose names are called with Darende give breath all of the dwellers. They are hearts and hands of people that reaches creator.

Somuncu Baba who was born in 1331 and lived till 1412 was a grandchild of Muhammed, The Last Prophet.

Beside Somuncu Baba, Osman Hulusi Efendi was a grandchild of last prophet and lived from 1914 to 1990.

he told that :”serve everyone for God, love and be loved : Not be spine to eyes, be hycint and rose”

Complex of somuncu baba and its mosque is the first place that have been visited. his eternal grave turned into a complex through the flowers, water and rose beds. Also it is to be mentioned that he was the teacher of haci bayrami veli who is one of the leader of islamic life in Anatolia. The place Pilgrimage, which is in the breast of valley of river takes human being in dream world and different thought.

Getting there

DARENDE is developing on billeting to show its beauties to tourists.

200,000 tourists came to Darende last year. Darende is stated on the D300 highway which links Ankara and Istanbul to Malatya and some 12 other cities .

The distance to Malatya is 110 km Sivas 180 km and Kayseri 250 km. The arrival from Darende to other cities is done by the long-distance bus.

There is also Erhaç Airport which has flights to Ankara and Istanbul everyday. It is 80 km away Darende.

Gürpinar waterfall is an important picnic place. It is 8 km away from Darende and has an excellent beauty about fall and its overflowing.

Zengibar Kalesi (Castle) is situated on the slopes high above the Tohma canyon.

In July there are some other activities such as wrestling and culture festival on 30 August circumcise feast music feast, karakucak wrestling feast… Those feast are done by the help Osman Hulusi efendi foundation. World wide popular circumciser Mr. Kemal Özkan helps to circumcise feast.

Education

Darende has been the center of education for centuries. Madrasahes, Schools, Kulliyes and libraries are the evidence of how the people in Darende are interested in education . The literacy rate in Darende is very high. The library founded by Sadrazam Mehmet paşa has many precious books and handwritten works with its 27,000 books. It is a veritable cultural treasure. Somuncu baba library in somuncu baba kulliye is also a cultural inheritance. Students dormitories, Darende high school, Professional education center, health and profession high school and imam-hatip high school are some major schools in Darende. Besides these official schools there are some private schools which are in competition against other schools. Private birgül primary school is an education center which consists a lot of opportunities and ready to educate children both mental and corporal. Private birgül high school purposes to prepare students on the aim of being worthwhile to themselves to society and to their country.
