Neighbouring provinces are Giresun to the west, Gümüşhane to the southwest, Bayburt to the southeast and Rize to the east. The provincial capital isTrabzon city, and the traffic code is 61. Starting from 9th century BC the city's name was also pronounced by the historians such asHomeros ,Herodotus ,Hesiod os. The first written source regarding Trabzon isAnabasis ofXenophon . An important Roman and Byzantine centre, it was the capital of theEmpire of Trebizond from1204 to1461 . Trabzon was made part of theOttoman Empire by Mehmet the Conqueror in1461 . It was initially a "sanjak " then gained the status of "eyalet " and finally became a "vilayet " in1868 .
