It has 1015 students on roll, including 165 students in the sixth form, making it broadly average in size. The School is part of the South Broxbourne Sixth Form Partnership that includes Cheshunt School, St Mary's C of E High School with Goffs School as an Associate Partner. The schools work together to provide a wide range of sixth form opportunities in the local area. The Partnership was mentioned by Ofsted as an example of good post-16 collaborative practice in the last Area-Wide Inspection Report on post-16 provision in Hertfordshire.
Students of all abilities attend the School. The School has, since 2003, been designated as a Specialist Technology College. The school has achieved the Sportsmark award and has been redesignated twice since, it is an Initial Teacher Training institution linked to universities in London, East Anglia and the Open University. The school also has Investor in People status being redesignated with an outstanding report in the summer of 2007.
The School has become very popular in the local community, thanks to the efforts of the Headteacher, Staff, Governors and students of the School. The parents provide invaluable support as does the school's dynamic sixth form 'Head Team'. Cheshunt School continues to be oversubscribed each year.
Most pupils transfer to the School from seven main partner primary schools, of which five are Specialist Status partners, though pupils come from over 30 schools in the south east of Hertfordshire and north Enfield. In the last three years the School has provide members of the full England U16 Football, Rugby Union and Rugby League teams. In 2008 a Year11 student played for the Turkey U19 national football team. The School is also known for its excellence in athletics. The school has strong links with local sports clubs.
In September 2006 the old Science Labs were refurbished with a radical new design and the swimming pool was also modernised. The new pool opened April 2007. In the summer of 2008 all Food Technology rooms were refurbished. All classrooms have data projectors or interactive whiteboards.
Academic performance
The School has recently seen a significant rise in its academic results and was named in January 2007 by the DFES in its prestigious list of the 'Top 100 Most Improved Schools' in England. The School has also been elected to the 'Most Improved Schools Club' for 2007 by the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust. This is the second time the School has been elected to the Club in the last three years.
Summer 2008 exam results were the best ever at the school. An 11% increase in 5+A*-C results saw nearly 70% of students stay on into the sixth form to undertake post-16 study. Cheshunt School now has its largest ever sixth form of 165 students. Summer A Level results saw 73% of A levels achieved at grades A-C. Over 60% of students took up university places in October 2008. Others are holding places and have taken a gap year.
History
Cheshunt Grammar School was built in 1935 in Windmill Lane. Over the years many newer buildings were added around the original building. In 1988 the County Council closed the nearby Bishopslea School in College Road, and distributed the pupils around the other local schools, although Cheshunt Grammar School took most of the pupils and some teachers. In 1990, it was decided to move the entire school to the old Bishopslea School site in College Road. The new school was called Cheshunt School and opened in September 1992. The old Grammar School was demolished and became a housing estate, with street names reflecting the names of past people at the school. Until 2005, the old outdoor pool remained disused and undeveloped, but has since been turned into flats.
