website_name =Hockerill Anglo-European College is an international
boarding school located inBishop's Stortford ("ca." halfway betweenLondon andCambridge ). It was formally known as Hockerill Boarding School when it was state funded.In 1850, Hockerill was founded as a teacher training school for women. The training school was closed in 1978 and, in 1980, was reopened as Hockerill School when
Fyfield School (inEssex ) andKennylands School (inBerkshire ) merged. In 1995 it was renamed Hockerill Anglo-European School and in 1998 it became known as Hockerill Anglo-European "College".Hockerill has more than 750 scholars, with about a third boarding. It offers, instead of A-Levels, the
International Baccalaureate (IB). In this way the college is unique: it is the only international boarding IB school inEngland . The school also gainedMusic College status. The Music College was officially opened by Lord David Puttnam on8 October ,2006 . As a result of the work of Paul Foulkes, Director of Music, the school is now outstanding in this area.The boarding section is divided into five boarding houses. The boarding houses are named after places in
England :Thames House (for boys in Years 10-13);Roding House (for girls in Years 11-13);Canterbury House (for boys in Years 7-10);St Albans House (girls in Years 7-9); and Rochester House, an extension of St Albans, owing to spatial restrictions (for girls in Year 10). When previously a school, the "Senior" houses (for years 8-11) were called Roding, Roxwell, Thames, Chelmer and for the year 7 students, "School House" (a house that new students went into as a year group, before chosing their preferred senior house). Later the houses of "Shannon" (female boarding) and "Rhone" were added.The academic side of Hockerill is divided into four "équipes", named after four pioneers in their own fields: Brunel,
da Vinci ,Goethe , andPascal .International connections
Hockerill has many international connections with schools owing to its Language College status. It has partner schools in
Belgium ,France ,Germany ,Italy ,Japan ,Romania ,Rwanda andSpain . As well as educational exchanges for language studies, Hockerill also offers charity trips to Romania and Rwanda as these countries are in need of money. Students can take part infund raising activities to earn money for Hockerill's Rwandan and Romanian partner schools.Now that Hockerill is a Music College, it organised a series of concerts in
Iaşi , the city in which their Romanian partner schools are situated. Students traveled to Romania and played at numerous concerts to raise money. They were also given 7 minutes' airtime on Romanian nationaltelevision . They also touredBucharest and Iaşi and performed in various locations in these areas. Another music trip took place inPrague ,Czech Republic in February 2008.Other trips are offered to students including geography field trips to

Russell Brand briefly attended Hockerill School.The Rwandan Controversy
6 Rwandan Exchanges ran away during a visit to England. The Modern Foreign Language Teacher - Mike Ullmann - has been notably blamed for the incident in a shocking fall from grace. Many people in the area feel that there was no benefit in bringing exchanges over to the UK as it would only provoke instances of students running away to build a better life in the western world. It is generally felt that the £8000 of charity money used to facilitate the visit would have been better use if it improved facilities in Gisenyi College, Rwanda.
