Hitchin Girls' School is a specialist science college in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, England. The school has 1030 students and is in a consortium for sixth form teaching with Hitchin Boys' School and the Priory School.

History

The school was founded in 1889 by John Mattock in the month of July, and was originally a boarding grammar school but is now a single sex comprehensive. It moved from Bancroft in the town centre to its present site in Highbury Road in 1908. Since 1960, there have been no more boarders. It was awarded specialist Science College status in 1974. The head teacher is Mrs Manning who replaced Mrs Edwards at the start of the 2007/8 academic year. The school maintains its reputation for an excellent learning environment, producing consistently high grades. The atmosphere in the school is one of enthusiasm from both the students and teachers. There are many opportunities within the school for students to voice their opinion, such as the student run school council, which meets regularly to discuss ideas and work to improve the school. The school still enjoys many old traditions, such as form running, which takes place at the end of every term, and the all important founders day, which gives the sixth form a chance to dress up. Founders day is always a fantastic occasion, bringing the school together to celebrate the school and the students that attend. The ofsted reports have proved that Hitchin Girls' School is a 'good school' and the majority of pupils who attend would agree. Many students have spent the happiest years of their life at Hitchin Girls' School.

Old Girls' Association

The original Old Girls' Association was established in 1916 and disbanded in 1976. A new one was founded in 1989 as part of the school's centenary celebrations.
