The main school is a Georgian Grade II listed building set in extensive grounds, which include a lake and an expanse of woodland. The property has a history dating back to the 15th century. In 1408 a member of the Kendal family conveyed the land to the Duke of Beaufort-son of John of Gaunt. In the years that followed, the estate passed through many hands, but eventually came into Royal ownership in the person of Henry VIII who in 1530 gave it to his natural son, Henry, Duke of Richmond and Somerset. The Duke died without an heir and consequently the estate reverted to the Crown. After possession by James I, the property passed into the Salisbury family and it is recorded that during the Civil War the Earl of Salisbury was Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire. In 1739, the Sixth Earl sold the estate to a William Jephson who built the present house and bequeathed it to his nephew Robert Phillimore in whose family it remained until bought by Kendal Hall County Club. Subsequently the site was acquired by Mr and Mrs D A Smith.
