BI Norwegian Business School former name BI Norwegian School of Management (Norwegian: Handelshøyskolen BI) is the largest business school in Norway and the second largest in all of Europe.[1] BI has in total 6 campuses with the main one located in Oslo.

History

BI Norwegian Business School was founded in 1943 by Finn Øien as 'Bedriftøkonomisk Institut' (English: Institute of Managerial Economics), hence the abbreviation BI. The current president is professor Tom Colbjørnsen. Past presidents include Jørgen Randers, co-author of the Club of Rome Report Limits to Growth; Peter Lorange, former president of IMD in Lausanne, Switzerland; Leif Frode Onarheim, a former member of the Norwegian Parliament and current CEO of leading Norwegian fish farming company Marine Harvest.

Current activities

BI Norwegian Business School is a self-owned, not-for-profit foundation whose sole focus is education and research. Any profit will be used to strengthen BI’s research and learning environment in accordance with the objectives of the school.

BI Norwegian Business School is one of Europe’s largest business schools with around 20,000 students and 340 permanent faculty. BI is the largest supplier of economic and administrative competence and skills in Norway with more than 200 000 graduates since 1983.

BI Norwegian Business School boasts the country’s leading faculty in the school’s spear-head areas of economics, management, strategy, marketing and finance. BI Norwegian Business School has organised its academic activities in eight separate research departments covering all of the disciplines that can be expected at a modern European business school.

BI Norwegian Business School has an international profile. BI’s faculty cooperate extensively internationally and BI has student exchange agreements with more than 170 institutions in 45 different countries. This gives BI’s students excellent opportunities to obtain international experiences and to experience intercultural learning.

BI Norwegian Business School of develops and delivers custom-made courses and programmes for a number of specific industries and organisations in the public and private sectors[2].


As of 2010 the school has 19,998 students.[3] This includes 9,567 full-time students. There are 752 employees, of whom 370 are academic and 382 are administrative. There are also 674 part-time lecturers.

BI offers a full set of programs for bachelor's degrees, master's degrees, and doctoral degrees, as well as executive education and tailor-made programs for businesses. The teaching languages are English (BBA and postgraduate programs) and Norwegian (majority of undergraduate programs and programs for local business life). The school currently participates in exchange programs with 170 foreign institutions in 45 countries.[4]

The internationally award winning main campus in Nydalen (Oslo)[5] was designed by Niels Torp[6], who also designed Gardermoen Airport.

Norsk Kundebarometer

Norsk Kundebarometer (NKB) (English: Norwegian customer barometer) is a research program arranged at BI, with a focus on relations between customers and businesses. Based on an annual survey from Norwegian households, it seeks to collect data that may be used for comparison between businesses, comparisons between various fields, and comparisons over time.[citation needed]

Activities abroad

Most BI students have the opportunity to spend one semester abroad as part of their BI degree. BI has almost 170 exchange agreements with academic institutions in more than 40 countries worldwide. The exchange agreements allow students to prepare for an international career by being exposed to different cultures and business philosophies. [7].

BI has roughly 1500 students in China[citation needed] through its close relationship with Fudan University in Shanghai, and is also the majority shareholder of the ISM University of Management and Economics (previously known as International School of Management) with around 2000 students located in Vilnius and Kaunas in Lithuania.[citation needed]

  • MSc in Leadership & Organizational Psychology- Organisational Psychology provides knowledge and expertise in the ways individual, group and organisational factors influence organisational performance, problem solving and decision making[8].
  • MSc in Business and Economics- The Master of Science in Business and Economics is a two year leadership and economics programme. Students entering this programme will take coursework together with students already enrolled in the integrated 5-year programme in Business and Economics (Siviløkonom)[9].

  • MSc in Strategic Marketing Management- The MSc in Strategic Marketing Management programme aims to educate market-oriented leaders for the modern economy. The program is founded on three pillars: marketing theory, statistical methods, and financial implications of marketing investments. Following this we view marketing as investments in customer assets with the objective of increasing customer equity and firm value[10].
  • MSc in Innovation and Entrepreneurship- The Master of Science in Innovation and Entrepreneurship is the latest master programme offered. Students will gain insight and highly sought after skills in development, project management, enterprises and entrepreneurial activities[11].
  • MSc in International Management- The MSc in International Management is BI’s answer to the challenges of international business life. The programme focuses on international strategy and management, cross-cultural management and international marketing[12].
  • MSc in Financial Economics- BI’s Financial Economics department is internationally recognised as one of the leading within its field. This excellent research quality is reflected in the MSc in Financial Economics[13].
  • MSc in Political Economy- The programme in Political Economy offers bolder challenges than mainstream business economics and better career opportunities than a traditional social science education[14].

   BI Norwegian Business School is a self-owned foundation and has no private owners
   BI is a business school, which creates research-based, lifelong learning both nationally and internationally in close interaction with students, business and industry and the public sector[16].



The current Executive Masters of Business Administration (EMBA) course at the Norwegian business school is fantastic. The new structure and the combination of the general EMBA course with other renowned business school in Europe, Asia and the United States gives the course an additional advantage. The new structure exposes participants in the course to business structure in Europe, Latin America, Asia and North America; hence providing participants with a global business exposure.

Student organizations

The school has two student organizations, one for the main campus in Oslo and one for the other campuses. The Oslo student organization is called "Studentforeningen ved Handelshøyskolen BI i Oslo" (SBIO) (English: The Student Association at BI in Oslo). This union was formed in 2005 after the relocation of the three locations in Oslo into one - Campus Nydalen. The three previous unions was called Bedriftøkonomisk Studentersamfund (BS), BISON and MØSS. BS was the oldest union, formed in 1964. The union for the other campuses is "BI Studentsamfunn" (BIS) (English: BI Student Community). This union was founded on February 7, 1987 and is today the largest student union of a private school in Norway.[citation needed]

The student newspaper is named INSIDE, and its circulation is 11,000.[citation needed]

The all-male student choir is named UFDA The Choir Boys[17] and was established in 1986.[citation needed]
