History
Murdoch station was constructed as part of the New MetroRail Southern Suburbs Railway project. It replaced Murdoch Park 'n' Ride, the bus station at the same location. The bus stands on the carpark level remain but are no longer used.
Service
Murdoch is on the Mandurah Line of the Transperth Trains network, a hybrid metro-commuter rail system with six lines in metropolitan Perth. As such, it receives trains northbound to central Perth and southbound to Mandurah and Rockingham. Four stopping patterns serve Murdoch station: all stations, C, K, and W.[1] In effect, Murdoch is served by all trains on the Mandurah Line.
In the inbound direction, all stations, K-, and W-pattern trains take about 15 minutes, averaging 55.2 km/h (34.3 mph), to arrive at Perth.[1] C-pattern trains stop at all stations except Canning Bridge heading to Perth, taking 14 minutes at an average of 59.1 km/h (36.7 mph).[1]
In the outbound direction, an all stations train takes about 32 minutes, averaging 105.6 km/h (65.6 mph), to arrive at Mandurah.[1] C-pattern trains operate locally to Mandurah apart from skipping Canning Bridge; this has no effect for passengers departing Murdoch for any southbound stations. K-pattern trains operate locally to Cockburn Central and then run express to Rockingham, taking 19 minutes to do so at an average of 92.8 km/h (57.7 mph).[1] W-pattern trains stop at all stations and terminate at Cockburn Central, taking 12 minutes averaging 80.4 km/h (50.0 mph).[1]
Station layout
Murdoch uses a simple island platform layout with two tracks. Platform 1 is used by trains bound for Perth underground station (these trains generally continue onto the Joondalup Line) whilst platform 2 is used by trains heading south towards Mandurah. Access to the station is provided from the busway platforms adjacent to South Street () with a concourse containing faregates and a pair of escalators and lifts heading down to the platform located in the central reservation of the Kwinana Freeway ().[2]

Bus transfers are available on the concourse level. The bus station is situated on a bridge structure extending over the freeway carriageways and train station.[3] Traffic signals at both ends of the bridge have been modified to include a bus phase.

Several measures have been implemented or proposed to provide priority for feeder buses servicing Murdoch station:
- Implemented:
- Bus lanes on South Street in peak hours extending east to Roe Highway (effective 6 June 2006).[4]
- Proposed (as of 2008):
- Lengthening of the sliplane used by buses entering the station from the west.[citation needed]
- Murdoch Transit Link, a bus transitway linking the train station with the Fiona Stanley Hospital (construction started in 2008[5]), Challenger TAFE and the Murdoch campus of Murdoch University.[6]
