It serves a well established residential area. A station opened on the site in 1880.[1] Four tracks pass through the station with an island platform provided between each pair- one island platform serving 'Down' trains travelling away from Sydney, and the other island platform serving 'Up' trains travelling towards Sydney. Doonside does not yet have Easy Access for wheelchairs.
