"Deuces" is a song by American recording artist Chris Brown, taken from his mixtape Fan of a Fan (2010). It was written by Brown, Tyga, and Kevin McCall, with the latter also producing the song. The R&B ballad also features guest vocal performances from Tyga and McCall. Lyrically, the song is about breaking it off with a girl after failed attempts to make the relationship work. It was released as a digital download in the United States on June 29, 2010.

"Deuces" was well received by critics, many of whom thought that the song was about Brown's former relationship with Barbadian singer Rihanna. Critics also praised the song for showing off Brown's "silky-smooth vocals". Following its release, "Deuces" peaked at number fourteen on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, and topped the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, marking it Brown's first number one on the chart since 2006 with his single "Say Goodbye". It also charted in the top-thirty in New Zealand, and the top seventy in the United Kingdom.

An accompanying music video, directed by Colin Tilley, was released on May 24, 2010. A remix extended play of the song was made available for download on November 2, 2010, and features appearances from Kanye West, T.I., Drake, Fabolous, André 3000 and Rick Ross. Brown performed "Deuces" several times, including 106 & Park, and the Cali Christmas concert. The song received a Grammy nomination in the Best Rap/Sung Collaboration category. As of January 2011, it has sold 1,000,000 copies in the United States alone.

Background and composition

"Deuces" was written by Brown, Tyga and Kevin McCall, with the latter also producing the song.[1] It was recorded at In Your Ear—a studio in Richmond, Virginia.[1] Before the release of the mixtape, "Deuces" leaked online on May 10, 2010.[2] It also features guest vocal performances from Tyga and McCall. The song was released as a digital download in the United States on June 29, 2010.[3] It is also the opening track on Brown's F.A.M.E. album.[4] During a Ustream session with fans in September 2010, Brown revealed that he would be releasing a remix. He said, "I’mma let y’all know a little secret. We got the "Deuces" remix coming. "Deuces" remix features myself, Fabolous, T.I., Drake, Kanye West, and André 3000."[5] A remix extended play was released to iTunes Stores on November 2, 2010.[6]

"Deuces" is a slow, down-tempo R&B[7] ballad[8] which shows off Brown's "silky-smooth vocals".[7] According to August Brown of Los Angeles Times, the song features "silvery synth chords, house-inspired vocal jitters and eerie harmonies".[9] On speaking about the song, Tyga told MTV News: "Basically it's about you getting rid of this girl, you tried to make it work, but you got to move on — So you put up one finger, put up another, and then 'Deuces'."[10]

Reception

Critical response

Becky Bain from Idolator, Jayson Rodriguez from MTV News, and Evan Rytlewski of The A.V. Club, had all thought the song was about Brown's former relationship with Barbadian singer Rihanna.[11][12][13] Editors from USA Today commented that on "Deuces", Brown "is taking it to the next phase".[14] Joanne Dorken from MTV UK said that the song was "a good platform for Brown to show off his silky-smooth vocals."[7] Mesfin Fekadu from ABC News US called it one of the "best songs" of 2010.[15] "Deuces" was nominated for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration at the 53rd Grammy Awards, but lost to "Empire State of Mind" sung by Jay-Z featuring Alicia Keys.[16] In May 2011, the song received a nomination for Best Collaboration at the 2011 BET Awards.[17]

Chart performance

"Deuces" debuted on the U.S. Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart at number seventy-two on the week of July 15, 2010.[18] In its ninth week, the song peaked at number one, marking it Brown's first number-one on the chart since 2006 with his single "Say Goodbye".[19] Overall, it is his third number one single on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.[19] Also in the U.S., the song peaked at number fourteen on the Billboard Hot 100.[20] As of January 2011, "Deuces" has sold 1,000,000 copies in the United States alone.[21] In the United Kingdom, the song peaked at number sixty-eight on the UK Singles Chart, becoming one of Brown's least successful singles on the chart.[22] On the UK R&B Chart, it peaked at number fourteen.[23] In New Zealand, "Deuces" peaked at number twenty-three, and remained on the singles chart for six weeks.[24]

Music video and live performances

The music video for "Deuces" premiered online on May 24, 2010, along with the video "No Bullshit", another track from the mixtape.[10] Both videos were directed by Colin Tilley.[10] The video for "Deuces" was filmed in black and white, against the graffitied backdrop of the Los Angeles River.[25] In the video, Brown is seen energetically dancing alone and later appears in scenes with Tyga and McCall, posing for the camera.[10]

Brown performed the song with Tyga on May 15, 2010, at the "Virginia Stand Up! A Call to Action" benefit concert, an event organized by Brown to help with continued relief efforts in Haiti following the January earthquake.[26] Brown also performed "Deuces" with Tyga and McCall at the Cali Christmas concert on December 3, 2010, wearing a charcoal grey suit and adidas sneakers.[27] In the week of his F.A.M.E. album release, he performed the song on 106 & Park.[28]
