Admissions
The current Headteacher is Ros Webber-Jones and Dr. Chris Rolph is the Executive Headteacher,[citation needed] and there are 75 teaching staff and 50 support staff. Currently there are about1000 students on roll, including 200 in the school's Sixth form.[1]
History
It is named after the small spring fed ditch that flows along Monk's Dyke Road to Louth Park. It provided the former Abbey with fresh water. But Monks' Dyke has been synonymous with the school on Monks' Dyke Road since the 1920s.
Specialist Status
In 1995 Monks' Dyke Technology College was designated a Technology College.[2] This means that they demonstrate commitment to using Technology to enhance all subject areas. To raise standards at all levels in the school they were given clear targets to meet, and must play an important role working with other schools and groups in the local community. Monks' Dyke Technology College said, "We believe that this enriches the students' curriculum and gives them opportunities that are not available to students in non-specialist schools."
In 2005 Monks' Dyke Technology College was identified by the government as a High Performing Specialist School, one of only 100 in the country, and was awarded Training School Status[2] This means that they could build on their work with other schools and the community by training teachers and other staff. In addition the school received extra funding which "is used for the benefit of our students."
In 2007 because of their continual high performance they were awarded a third specialism: Vocational School Status. This is highly unusual and recognises Monks' Dyke's contributions to the education of students across the area. As a Vocational school they will be able to increase their training brief to include skills required for vocational subjects. This will enable the school to include more vocational subjects within the school curriculum increasing Monks' Dyke Technology College students' opportunities.
New Media Centre
The College's New Media Centre allows students to study for NVQ Level 3 in Broadcast Journalism, and is a well-equipped building. It was opened by the Earl of Wessex and his wife on 21 September 2001. Students of all ages use the dance, radio, TV and recording studios. The Blue Room is a TV studio that is often hired by local community groups.
School Houses
At Monks' Dyke Technology College, students are split up into houses which are named after famous historical figures:
Brunel , Curie , Da Vinci , Faraday and Newton .
The vertical tutor groups have a small number of students from each year group in, and each tutor group is part of a house. The houses provide a strong sense of identity and form the basis for competitions, especially sports day.
