The Deepings School is a business and enterprise college on "Park Road" in Deeping St James, near Peterborough in England.

Admissions

Over 1,400 pupils aged 11-18 study, taught by over 80 teaching staff. The school has a highly acclaimed sixth form for A-level studies, that recently performed very well in the school league tables. The current headmaster is Mr Beckett, recently promoted in 2005 to the post after the retirement of the preceding Dr Bryers.

Extra income recently has seen a development programme for the school, with a new Business and Enterprise block and the installation of a new staff room, with new toilets. It is famed for its Sixth Form which one of the best in the country for a comprehensive school, this is largely thanks to the hard work and time dedicated to the department by Mr Cannings, Mrs Beverly Shilling and Mrs Dimaloe.

Departments

The school offers a wide range of subjects, within the following departments;

Art & Technology

The Deepings School art facilities consist of the second floor of the Design block. Recently, ICT has been introducted to increase the role thereof in art.

Communications

The oldest part of the school serves as the English language block. Students may take both English language and English Literature for GCSE, and have the option of doing Communication Studies or English Literature at A-level.

Foreign languages are also taught at the school. These consist of French and German. Since the removal of a compulsory language at GCSE level in 2004, uptake of a second language has decreased at level 2 stage. French is taken overall by more students than German.

Although attempts have been to introduce other languages, these so far remain confined only to after school and night classes.

Spanish is also held as an after school club for people who want to, top class year 7 of 2007-2008 adcadmic year and year 10 group of 5 are being taught it.

cience and Maths

Science is taught along the national Curriculum. Of interest is the Further Maths course at A-level, which unlike at many schools, is timetabled.

Humanities

As well as Geography and History being taught, Philosophy and Sociology have recently seen larger uptakes for A-level courses.

History

The school was originally called the "Deepings County Secondary Modern School" being built in September 9 1958 at a cost of £105,000 for about 250 pupils, being officially opened on May 10 1959 by David Cecil, 6th Marquess of Exeter. Whilst under this name, the headmaster, John Sweet, was killed in a crash in his Ford Cortina on October 2 1974 at North Rauceby on the A17. He had been headmaster since 1972, and a new headmaster started in Spring 1975. The school became a comprehensive school in the mid-1970s with around 450 pupils - the first true comprehensive in South Kesteven, and takes pupils also from Stamford. The [http://www.leisureconnection.co.uk/centre/2/48/deepings-leisure-centre.html Deepings Leisure Centre] is on the school grounds. In 1990, a new library and sixth form centre were built, opened by John Harvey-Jones in 1991. A language and maths block were built in 1997. A drama studio was built in 1998. The Duke of Gloucester opened the buildings on April 28 1999.
