Gleed Boys' School

The Gleed Boys' School is a school for boys aged 11 to 16, on "Halmer Gardens", Spalding, Lincolnshire.

The current headteacher is Geoff Cowley, deputy headteachers are Mr Scott and Ms North, there are 40(approx) teaching staff and a large number of suppport staff, the current number of pupils is 650. Currently there are 5 forms in each of years 7 to 11.

With modern teaching techniques such as independent learning and pupil led classes the schools exam results continue to improve with an increase each year. A wide variety of subjects are available as well as the 'core subjects' such as Maths, English, Science (Core Science & Additional Science) and RE, there is also ICT, Media Studies (GCSE), DT (including Food Technology), PHSE, French, Art, Geography, Drama, History and PE. A large EAL department supports students who are improving their skills in the English language.

Lincolnshire county councillor Mr Nick Carter is the chairman and the other school governors are P Harrison (vice-chair), L Jackson, R Marsh, M Pitcher, J Hammiil, J Foot, A Chapman, E Robinson, S Williams, T Adams, P Brown and D Loughry.

The school publishes the 'Gleed Boys' School Newsletter' termly and an annual prospectus. The school maintains its own website.

pecialist Status

Unlike the adjoining Gleed Girls', as of 2008, the Gleed Boys' has no specialist school status.

Facilities

There is an artificial turf field, next to the main school field, though there have been problems with drainage, putting it out of use at times. The astro turf pitch is managed by the school. The [http://www.spaldinghockeyclub.co.uk Spalding Hockey Club] teams make use of the turf for training. The astro turf is used regularly for PE/games lessons, during these lessons activities such as football, hockey and the popular choice of volleyball during the summer. New changing rooms have been installed near the pitch. On the large playing field there are rugby and cricket pitches as well as a running track and long jump sand pit. The large inside gym is used for lessons such as gymnastics, archery etc. Recent improvements also include a fitness suite. At the end of the school field there is a 6th form building, it will be named the South Holland post 16 centre.

Extra-curricular activities

The large PE department organises a wide range of sports and often hosts inter-school events, such as cross country, football, rugby and cricket. The school also offers archery and a chess club, as well as these the large Design Technology department also opens their doors for after school activities to those pupils who decide they would like to practice the skills of DT. The department has also set up an after school 'Science & Technology' club.

The school regularly run a 'Summer school' in August for year 6 pupils about to enter year 7. This usually includes a coach trip to a site connected with the theme of that year's summer school. Previous themes have included 'Moondial' by Helen Cresswell and 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' by Roald Dahl.The School CouncilGleed Boy's School Council is one of the most succsessfull student councils within the District and is chaired by Charles Long. It started with ideas from the students brought to a meeting by Mr. Anthony Grunwell, however through the years the council has learnt to elect a new chairman, a new deputy chairman,(Peter Darley) a secretary (Nicholas Johnson)and certain comitees. Throughout the years the council has seen many new things done to the school including the new summer uniform and the opening of the school shop. The current Chairman would like to add a much thankyou to the much needed supporters including the teaching staff and the headteacher.

Charity Fundraising

Christopher Smith, Thomas Adams and Oliver Needham (Year 11 students) helped the school to raise over £300 for Beating Bowel Cancer on 1st February 2008. They held a quiz night at the school and raised £324 from the evening. The Gleed Boys also raised £104 for its Loud Tie Day.It was featured in the Spalding Guardian Newspaper on 13th February 2008 [http://www.spaldingtoday.co.uk/communitynews/Schools-unite-for-tie-day.3771573.jp] .
