Sir John Nelthorpe School

Sir John Nelthorpe School

The Sir John Nelthorpe School is a comprehensive school on "Grammar School Road" in Brigg, North Lincolnshire.

History

The school, also referred to as SJN, was formed as a grammar school in 1669 by Sir John Nelthorpe when he died, who was born in Brigg in 1614. He was unmarried and wanted his wealth, from his estate across Lincolnshire, to create a school in his name. The buildings were opened around 1680. New buildings were added in 1879. Also in the town is the "Nelthorpe Arms" named after him.

Grammar School

It became the Brigg Boys' Grammar School which had a boarding house. Former pupils of the grammar school are referred to as "Old Briggensians". Also in the town was the Brigg Girls' High School, another grammar school. By the late 1960s, many sixth-form courses were taught jointly with the girls' school. Also there were lessons on Saturday mornings, similar to modern-day British independent schools. The boys school merged with the girls' school in September 1976 to become a comprehensive.

Curriculum

It shares the sixth form, known as the Brigg Sixth Form College, with the town's other comprehensive school, the Vale of Ancholme School. It is one of the best performing comprehensives in the whole of Lincolnshire, and the joint-best in North Lincolnshire at GCSE, with 56% gaining five grades A-C including English and Maths, sharing this honour with the South Axholme Community School in Epworth. It gets the second best A-levels in North Lincolnshire, though some distance behind the outstanding John Leggott College in Scunthorpe.

Partner schools

Since 1996, it has had a partnership with the [http://www.leoninum.org/Leoninum/frameset/index.html?http://www.leoninum.org/Leoninum/Partner/Austauschschulen/England/index.html Gymnasium Leoninum] in Handrup, Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen) in Germany.
