History
After 1950, Dalian suddenly faced high population growth. Due to its geographical situation, good cultural heritage & good transport, it attracted many native & foreign people. This caused increasing of motor cars & buses. It started a problem for trams & then the transport authority decided to reduce tram network at a large scale.
From then, 8 tram routes were closed one by one up to 1980. But at that time, overdependence on motorcars & buses caused major traffic and environmental problems. The tram network had been reduced to only 3 routes, but opening some old routes were not possible, since almost all of those routes were already occupied by bus. Reminding the problems of trams & buses, the Transport authority tried to get a solution to merge both types of transport, thus resulted trolleybus. It runs with electricity and does not cause air pollution, but it utilizes existing roads, which was already occupied by many motor vehicles. Hence, the expansion of the trolleybus network was not ideal as well. At that moment, a proposal of subway system arose. After overcoming financial & political hurdles, construction started for the first line in September 2000. October 2002 saw the trial opening of the first line, which was finally put into operation in May 2003.
3 project is San Haoxian branch, the line stations and main line of bifurcation in the zone in 2008 in June to start debugging operation, 2008 December 28 the official passenger operations.
