rapid transit system that serves the city ofTianjin , which was the second city (after Beijing) in China to operate a subway system. Currently it operates 2 lines: Line 1, with 22 stations, and Line 9, with 19 stations. Line 9 is also colloquially known as theBinhai Mass Transit which leads to the city of Binhai and the port of Tianjin 45 km east of Tianjin on theBohai Sea coast. The Tianjin Metro system is currently under heavy expansion to meet modern mass transit standards with plans to add an additional 7 lines (totaling 9 lines) and 130 to 153 km of rail tracks by2010 .History
Construction started on
July 4 ,1970 , the first part 3.6 km and 4 stations had been completed in February 1976, the second part which has another 1.6 km and Xinanjiao and Erweilu stations completed in 1980. After construction resumed, the total length was 7.4 km, 8 stations, and service on the line began onDecember 28 ,1984 .Original Line
Tianjin Metro original line consisted of stations from Xizhan (Tianjin west railway station) to Xinhua Lu (Xinhua road). However the metro service was suspended on
October 9 ,2001 in order to modernize the line. The original line ran only 2 to 3 metres under the city's streets, and part of the line used a dried outcanal bed. The constructors of the line were mostly volunteers from factories, schools and other institutions around the city. Besides upgrading the original line, the length of Line 1 was increased and a further 13 stations were added. InDecember 28 ,2005 construction of Line 1 was completed and service was resumed onJune 12 ,2006 .The original line had 8 stations on the 7.4 km route:

The long term plan of the metro system includes 8 metro lines and one light rail line (line 9). Lines 1, 2 and 3 are designated as the backbone of the rapid transit system.

Tianjin Metro Line 1 (Liuyuan-Shuanglin) is 26.188 km long. It reopened on
June 12 ,2006 .Stations:

This line is being planned and will be 35.7 km long with 28 stations.
Line 5
This line is being planned and will be 31.2 km long with 24 stations.
Line 6
This line is being planned and will be 21.4 km long with 18 stations.
Line 7
This line is being planned and will be 25.5 km long.
Line 8
This line is being planned and will be 20 km long.
