All of the albums were released by the now-dormant Elektra Records, except for the most recent album, released by Warner Bros. Records.[2] One of the most commercially successful heavy metal bands, Metallica has sold over 59 million albums in the United States.[3]
Metallica has received nine Grammy Awards; six were for the "Best Metal Performance" award in 1990, 1991, 1992, 1999, 2004, and 2009. The song "Enter Sandman" has been particularly successful for the band; it was nominated for "Best Rock Song" at the Grammy Awards, and it won the "Best Metal Video" award at the MTV Video Music Awards in 1992. The group has also received two awards from the MTV Video Music Awards: one for "Enter Sandman" and another for "Until it Sleeps". Metallica has been nominated for "Favorite Heavy Metal/Hard Rock Artist" four times at the American Music Awards, winning it twice, in 1993 and 1997. It has also received three nominations from the Billboard Music Awards, winning all three. The band was first nominated at the Juno Awards in 1992, receiving three nominations but winning none; it was not nominated for another Juno Award until 2005, where the band won the award for "Jack Richardson Producer of the Year" for the song "Some Kind of Monster". Overall, Metallica has received 24 awards from 59 nominations.
