Academic standards
This is an over-subscribed school. In its September 2007 inspection Ofsted assessed the school as Satisfactory, second from bottom on a four point scale. They said "Colne Community School is an innovative school with many strengths and is well regarded by its students and a large majority of their parents. At present, its academic performance is close to national averages".[2]
The latest Ofsted inspection (January 2011) the school is still classed as a Satisfactory but it is well placed to improve further. They explain about the Principal and how he has made improvements to the school since the last inspection and the security and safety of the site is Outstanding. They continue to describe the improvements in the sites Six Form College and has been marked from a Satisfactory to a Good.[3]
Admissions controversy
For several years there has been controversy over the admission arrangements. In September 2002 an independent adjudicator upheld the Essex LEA objections to the school's change of admissions arrangements from giving priority to those who attended feeder primary schools within the former catchment area to giving priority to those who placed the school as their first preference, regardless of the primary school attended or place of residence.[4] A further attempt by the school to introduce these revised admission arrangements was again rejected, by an independent adjudicator, in July 2006.[5]
Sports facilities
The Colne Community School's AstroTurf pitch was officially opened by HRH The Princess Anne on 25 February 2003.[6]
Extracurricular activities
Unusually, the campus contains Brightlingsea Sports Centre which is used by members of the public and students.
