Tudor Court Primary School was the first of three Primary Schools to be built on the Chafford Hundred residential development in Grays and opened in 1992 initially as a single form entry school for 80 pupils. The school has since expanded three times to account for the rapidly expanding community of Chafford Hundred and was designed to accommodate 420 pupils after its three stages: [ [http://democracy.thurrock.gov.uk/CMISWebPublic/Binary.ashx?Document=6764 Thurrock Council Learning Services Committee] ]
Phase I expansion consisted of building an additional eight classrooms, hall, kitchen, administration areas, playground, field and toilets.
Phase II expansion consisted of three classbases, toilets, and a smaller playground giving a total of 330 places within the school buildings. The permanent classbases were then supplemented by six system built buildings to accommodate a further 198 places giving a total capacity of 498.
Phase III consisted of three classbases, pupil toilets, storage area, second hall and additional playground space.
On 23 March 2001 a large hole believed to be up to 20ft deep appeared in the staff car park. Firefighters from Grays were called upon to pull two vehicles to safety after their rear axles had sunk into the ground. Further investigation revealed the hole was due to chalk pit burrows that the car park was built upon however there was no threat to the main fabric of the school and no further instances have occurred since. Intake
Pupil intake forecasts after phase II expansion:
Despite Thurrock Council believing that after the initial surge for places that the school will decline back to its strategic plan size of 420 it actually increased considerably leading the phase III expansion and its current capacity of over 600 pupils. [ [http://democracy.thurrock.gov.uk/CMISWebPublic/Binary.ashx?Document=6764 Thurrock Council Learning Services Committee] ] Due to the ever expanding Chafford Hundred further capacity is still required.
Future
A further £2.5m building project is now under way and is expected to take approx 12-14 months after which the school will have an additional six classrooms plus bigger hall and I.C.T suite. The construction was previously delayed due to planning concerns of nearby residents which were addressed before being given the green light.
