Geography
North Riverside is located at 41°50′46″N 87°49′47″W / 41.84611°N 87.82972°W (41.846222, -87.829585)[1].
According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.5 square miles (3.9 km2), all of it land.
Demographics
As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 6,688 people, 2,935 households, and 1,746 families residing in the village. The population density was 4,331.2 people per square mile (1,676.8/km²). There were 2,985 housing units at an average density of 1,933.1 per square mile (748.4/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 90.70% White, 2.96% African American, 0.13% Native American, 2.62% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 2.45% from other races, and 1.12% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.13% of the population, including 6.5% Mexican.
The top five ancestries reported in North Riverside as of the 2000 census were Polish (17.7%), German (16.2%), Czech (14.5%), Italian (14.0%) and Irish (13.1%).[3]
There were 2,935 households out of which 19.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.4% were married couples living together, 9.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.5% were non-families. 35.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 19.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.15 and the average family size was 2.80.
In the village the population was spread out with 15.6% under the age of 18, 5.5% from 18 to 24, 27.5% from 25 to 44, 23.3% from 45 to 64, and 28.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 46 years. For every 100 females there were 89.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.1 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $43,856, and the median income for a family was $53,790. Males had a median income of $41,469 versus $29,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $24,034. About 2.3% of families and 4.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.6% of those under age 18 and 3.1% of those age 65 or over.
Government
North Riverside is divided between three congressional districts. The area east of the Des Plaines River is in Illinois' 3rd congressional district; the area west of 1st Avenue is in the 7th district; the area between 1st Avenue and the river, consisting almost entirely of the western half of the Riverside Golf Club, is in the 4th district.
The Village of North Riverside is governed by a Village President (also referred to a Mayor), Village Clerk, and six Trustees who are all elected to four year terms. The terms are staggered, with elections being help in odd number years. The Mayor and Board of Trustees exercise policy-making and legislative powers of the Village, including adopting ordinances and resolutions, approving the Village’s annual appropriation and operating budget and enacting tax levies. In addition, the Village Board receives findings and recommendations from a number of appointed citizen advisory committees
