United States Census Bureau , the village has a total area of 2.2square mile s (5.6km² ), all of it land.Demographics
As of the
census GR|2 of 2000, there were 8,155 people, 2,998 households, and 2,035 families residing in the village. Thepopulation density was 3,797.4 people per square mile (1,464.5/km²). There were 3,107 housing units at an average density of 1,446.8/sq mi (558.0/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 49.29% White, 36.89%African American , 0.17% Native American, 5.13% Asian, 0.06%Pacific Islander , 5.79% from other races, and 2.67% from two or more races.Hispanic orLatino of any race were 13.10% of the population, including 9.8% Mexican.The top five non-African American, non-Hispanic ancentries reported in Hillside as of the 2000 census were German (11.4%), Italian (9.3%), Irish (9.3%), Polish (5.3%) and English (4.1%). 2007-04-11 .]There were 2,998 households out of which 32.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.3% were married couples living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.1% were non-families. 27.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.25.
In the village the population was spread out with 24.7% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 31.8% from 25 to 44, 19.4% from 45 to 64, and 15.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 93.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.5 males.
