Munds Park is a census-designated place (CDP) in Coconino County, Arizona, United States. The population was 1,250 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Munds Park is located at 34°56′41″N 111°38′15″W / 34.94472°N 111.6375°W / 34.94472; -111.6375 (34.944861, -111.637498).^[1]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 22.3 square miles (58 km²), of which, 22.3 square miles (58 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.10 km²) of it (0.09%) is water.

Munds Park is situated in a valley and extends up fairly steep hills around it.^{[citation needed]}

Demographics

As of the census^[2] of 2000, there were 1,250 people, 583 households, and 378 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 56.0 people per square mile (21.6/km²). There were 2,994 housing units at an average density of 134.2/sq mi (51.8/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 95.92% White, 0.32% Black or African American, 0.80% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 1.20% from other races, and 1.52% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.68% of the population.

There were 583 households out of which 16.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.2% were married couples living together, 2.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.0% were non-families. 26.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.14 and the average family size was 2.58.

In the CDP the age distribution of the population shows 15.5% under the age of 18, 4.3% from 18 to 24, 21.3% from 25 to 44, 36.1% from 45 to 64, and 22.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 50 years. For every 100 females there were 100.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 102.3 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $41,432, and the median income for a family was $49,803. Males had a median income of $40,558 versus $22,200 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $22,769. About 4.4% of families and 7.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.4% of those under age 18 and none of those age 65 or over.

Pinewood Country Club

Munds Park is home of the Pinewood Country Club, which is an 18 hole championship golf course. It is the most prominent feature from interstate 17 northbound. The course itself does not open until about memorial day, although in years past has opened later due to heavy or late snows. It closes in October but has been open into November on some occasions. The clubhouse was constructed in the late 1950s and is home to two dining/event rooms, a restaurant, and a bar, plus it has a patio for outdoor seating. The club features a large driving range, chipping green, and putting green, and challenging holes for all skill levels. During summer, the teetimes are normally filled, and the course is open seven days a week, weather permitting. The country club has a lightning warning system, and a loud, high pitched siren warns golfers to get off the course when lightning is in close proximity.^[3]

Outdoor Activities

Munds Park is situated in the cool pines of northern Arizona, so summers are mild enough for Munds Park to become a motorsport haven. ATVs and Dirtbikes are common, along with dune buggys. Lake O'Dell, a seasonal Lake is popular for fishing when it is stocked. Several Hiking trails like Crystal Point Trail and Munds Canyon Overlook Trail start in Munds Park. A community park features a playground, basketball courts, tennis courts, and large fields capable of soccer, football, baseball, and other field sports. The Munds Park RV Resort is perfect for camping without the camping part, and the resort features a lounge with a pool. During winter, Snow Mobiling, Cross Country Skiing, and sledding is possible with perfect terrain for all of the above winter activities. Ice Skating on lake O Dell is not encouraged, although very rarely the ice is thick enough. The lake is not stocked during winter. The Pinewood country club is open during winter, but the golf course is not, although many kids use it as a snowplay area with hills and no trees.
