Mahmoud El-Gohary (Arabic: محمود الجوهرى‎) (born February 20, 1938 in Cairo) is an Egyptian football coach and former player.

Career

El-Gohary is one of the most important figures in the history of Egyptian and African football, and is considered by many as the best Egyptian football coach ever.^{[citation needed]} He was the top scorer of the 1959 edition of the African Cup of Nations, which was won by Egypt. He was the manager of the Egyptian national team from 1988 to 2002, and helped the team qualify for the 1990 World Cup after a 56-year absence from the tournament.

El-Gohary was manager of the Jordan national team, leading the squad to its first ever qualification for the AFC Asian Cup in China 2004. The team reached the quarter final stage.

In August 2004 and under El-Gohary management, Jordanian national team reached its highest FIFA World Rankings in its history; rank of 37.^[1]
