Route description

Delaware Route 42 heads to the southeast from DE 6 on Blackiston Road. At the intersection with DE 6, the road contiunes to the northwest as unnumbered Longridge Road, which runs to the Maryland border where it becomes Maryland Route 330. Maryland Route 330 runs through Kent County, Maryland and, by way of Maryland Route 313, gives access to U.S. Route 301. DE 42 itself follows Blackiston Road to Kenton, where it becomes Commerce Street. In Kenton, it intersects with Delaware Route 300 (Main Street).[1][2]

Past Kenton, DE 42 continues to the east on Seven Hickories Road, passing through countryside. In Seven Hickories, it meets Delaware Route 15 and the two routes head east for a concurrency. They split near Moores Corner, where DE 15 heads to the south on Kenton Road. DE 42 heads east toward the town of Cheswold, where it becomes Main Street. It passes through the town and intersects U.S. Route 13 on the eastern edge of town.[1][2]

The route then continues east on Fast Landing Road. It passes over the Delaware Route 1 toll road, where it features a ramp for emergency vehicles but no non-emergency access. It heads to the northeast through farmland before making a sharp turn to the southeast through marshland adjacent to the Leipsic River. It then enters the town of Leipsic where it heads east on Second Street and ends at Delaware Route 9.[1][2]

History

By 1920, what is now DE 42 existed as an unimproved county road.[3] The road was completed as a state highway between Kenton and Lepisic by 1924.[4] By 1932, the route was under construction as a state highway between Blackiston and Kenton.[5] When Delaware created its state highway system by 1936, DE 42 was assigned to its current alignment between DE 300 in Kenton and DE 9 in Leipsic and the state highway between Blackiston and Kenton was completed.[6] By 1966, the route was extended to Blackiston.[7]
