Route description
M-155 began at a junction with Business Loop 96 in Howell where it traveled southwest on Michigan Avenue. After a half mile, the road turned westward along Mason Road where it traveled out of Howell. Shortly after, the route turned southwest on Norton Road before turning back to the west. The road then, briefly, turned south onto County Farm Road which delivered it to Hillcrest Drive, on which it traveled to the hospital where it terminated.[3]
History
The Michigan State Sanitorium was established in 1907, primarily to treat patients with tuberculosis. After 1955 the hospital also handled patients with mental illnesses. In 1961 the sanitorium became the Howell State Hospital, and later the Hillcrest Center in 1978. The facility operated until 1982 when it was abandoned, and the building finally demolished a few years after.
To serve this facility M-155 was assumed into the state trunkline system in 1931. It began at a junction with US 16 in Howell, what is today Business Loop 96. It continued to serve the facility over the next fifty years and beyond. After the hospital was abandoned, the route markers remained on the road, serving a field, until they were finally removed in 1987.[2]
Major intersections
The entire highway is in Livingston County.
