Mazenod College is a Roman Catholic Independent school for boys located in the Melbourne suburb of Mulgrave. It is one of three schools run by the Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI) and the only one in Victoria. Mazenod College is a member of the Associated Catholic Colleges. Its sister school is Avila College, located in Mount Waverley. The current rector is Fr Michael Twigg OMI.

Crest, motto, name and history

The college is named after St Eugene de Mazenod, founder of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate and the college motto is to "Leave Nothing Undared for the Kingdom of God." This translates into taking every opportunity to share the Gospel messages. It requires radical daring and necessary and appropriate risks to share Christ with the world. In honour of France, the country of Bishop de Mazenod, there is a band of five fleur-de-lys along the top, one for the Oblate Fathers and one each for the four foundation parishes. The centre features the Cross, the Christian symbol, worn by the Oblates who direct the college, and on it is mounted the emblem of the State of Victoria, the Southern Cross on a blue background, the colour of Mary Immaculate. The letters O.M.I. appear around the foot of the Cross indicating the Oblate service of Christianity. The motto, "Nihil linquendum inausum – Leave nothing undared", is taken from the writings of Bishop de Mazenod. The College colours – black, white and blue – appear on the badge. Mazenod College was founded in 1967 in St. Joseph's Primary School in nearby Springvale, Victoria to serve the parishes of Springvale, Clayton, Springvale North and Glen Waverley. Due to no government funding, the school was in a tight financial position which lasted for six years. In the first year, there was 79 students and two teachers. Mazenod stayed at St Joseph's until Tuesday, 22 April 1968 when it moved into the first stage of its present building - two classrooms just beyond the office section.

In 1969 the two science rooms beyond the second stairs were added and in 1971 further (much needed) classrooms. Further extensions were the library / canteen in 1974, the penthouse block in 1975, the administration block in 1978 and the chapel in 1983.

The college expanded to the other side of Kernot Avenue in 1984 when the Manual and Fine Arts Complex was opened. The present school library was built in 1987 when, with the addition of a lecture theatre and Year 12 complex, the O'Rourke Wing opened. Finally, a new staff and conference room was added in 1992 to cater for the needs of an expanding staff and use of school facilities.

In 2007, Mazenod opened its new Learning Centre room, much bigger than the previous one, including more computers and more room for students and staff.

Building continues to this day with the new Founders' Complex completed in 2007 dedicated to those people who founded the College; the Families, the Students, the Staff and Oblates. It houses state of the art computer, music and drama facilities. In 2009, Fr. Moroney O.M.I, built a new Year 12 cafeteria facility, 2009 also saw the quadrangle with a new surface, synthetic grass. In late 2010, Mazenod begun making new developments to its facilities, the old Computer Room 6 is now becoming another science room with the addition of computers, they have also decided creating an elevator from the Year 7 corridor to the Year 11 Corridor. Mazenod have also re-done the pitch of the soccer field with new synthetic grass.

The old Year 9 Corridor has been re-named the "Heritage Corridor" as it has pictures of old collegians, alumni and the most notable people from Mazenod's history. Mazenod also decided to add a plasma LCD to the corridor, to display past pictures, significant events and important people of Mazenod College throughout the day.

In 2011, the new elevator and science room was opened. The lift is for any person with disability to use and to access all levels of the school. From bottom to the top level. The old Computer room transformed itself to a new Biology lab. This lab is used for Science and Biology classes.

Also in 2011, new traffic enforced rules were place into the college. These rules needs to be followed or major accidents will happen throughout the college. The list of rules are listed below.

• Bus companies have been asked not to collect students from the bus stop on Springvale Road, directly opposite Clunies Ross Avenue. This is due to students crossing six lanes of Springvale Road traffic, without any traffic protection (i.e., lights and crossings). The Council have asked the College to enforce the management of this change and the College will enforce this. There are bus stops located on the corner of Wellington and Springvale Roads, as well as the corner of Monash Drive and Springvale Road, that are serviced by traffic lights.

• The Grenda and Australiner buses will pick-up and drop off students in the Bus Zone of the College (the main car-park in the College grounds). This Bus Zone is only to be used by the Buses, 300 students catching them and staff. This change is to provide greater safety for our pedestrian traffic.

Grenda’s Buses will park in the bays closest to the Founder’s Complex and the Australiner Buses will park on the Eastern side of the Bus Zone.

• From the beginning of Term 2, there will be RESTRICTED ACCESS to Kernot Avenue and Murdoch Avenue between 8:00am and 9:00am as well as 3:00pm to 4:00pm. It has been recommended that NO STANDING signs will exist on both sides of Kernot Avenue. NO STUDENT IS TO BE DROPPED OFF OR COLLECTED FROM KERNOT AVENUE AND MURDOCH AVENUE . Pick-up zones include – Brandon Park Drive, Monash Drive and the Monash Garden’s Car Park off Wellington Road. This is to ensure greater safety for pedestrian use in Kernot Avenue. Currently we have a very dangerous combination of cars and students and this measure is designed to alleviate congestion, dangerous parking and driving practices.

• The Monash Council are currently constructing an extra speed hump in Kernot Avenue to further enhance student safety.

The Monash Council have negotiated with Vic Roads to have 40 km/h signs erected in Monash Drive to provide greater protection to pedestrians. Please be mindful of traffic regulations in the area as Council will enforce them.

In 1 years time, a planned multi sports complex will be built. This complex will host all major events and assemblies within the college. An underground car-park is also planned to be built for this.

Catholic identity

Mazenod College is a Catholic College where the faith is given great respect and centrality. Mass is celebrated every morning at 8:10am and each year level is responsible for a morning. A full school Mass (called The Inaugural Mass) is celebrated in St Patrick's Cathedral each year and full school masses are held on May 21 for Founder's Day (St Eugene de Mazenod's feast day), August 15 (Assumption of Mary) and an Advent Mass on the last day of school in preparation for Christmas. The Advent Mass each year is held at Good Shepherd.

Liturgy prefects

Liturgy Prefects are present in each of the classes and help with the planning, leading, celebration and cleaning up of each liturgy of the College. They are responsible for the distribution of ashes on Ash Wednesday and also the planning of the Class Masses each morning. The prefects are also involved in many of the college's big events (e.g., Founders Day Mass)

The Rector of Mazenod College is appointed by the Provincial of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate who have the responsibility for the administration of the College and the Pastoral care of students. The appointment is confirmed by the Archbishop. The College's Rectors are:

Today

Mazenod College has over 1,180 students enrolled in the school and over 140 staff members. It also has several bands, including its symphony orchestra, string ensembles, 5 choirs, the Concert Band, The Symphonic Wind Band. In 2006, building works commenced and were completed in 2007. These included a brand new complex, called the Founder's Complex (blessed and opened on March 25, 2007), for the Computer Rooms, servers, Manual and Fine Arts Complex and the music tutorial provided by the college, renovations of the 'old' Manual and Fine Arts Centre (it became the Year 7 area) and a new building catering to the needs of maintenance and grounds staff. The new building also comprises staff amenities and equipment storage.

The College completed its full-sized cafeteria and multi-purpose centre in 2009, the biggest development since the Founders Complex. The cafeteria is only accessible to Year 12 Students and the VCAL class.

International relationships

Mazenod College currently has a close relationship with two overseas schools; Daisho Gakuen College in Osaka, Japan, and Istituto Maria Immacolata in Milan, Italy. These relationships were formed to strengthen Mazenod's LOTE department, giving students the invaluable opportunity to come in contact with Japanese and Italian students (both languages are available for study at Mazenod). Each year Mazenod and its brother schools overseas undertake a student exchange study trip, with Mazenod students travelling to Osaka or Milan for a study trip and students from Daisho or I.M.I travelling to Melbourne on exchange for a short period. This usually occurs in alternating years.

International Oblate Youth Encounter 2008

On July 9 through to July 13, 2008, Mazenod College hosted the International Oblate Youth Encounter for over 800 pilgrims from around the world. This gathering was the Oblate Preparation for the World Youth Day to be held in Sydney. Over 150 current and former students took part in the Encounter and World Youth Day.
