This very remote refuge is a part of the Bowdoin Wetland Management District (WMD), and is unstaffed. The refuge consists of only 80 federally owned acres (0.4 km2), while the remaining 2,500 acres (10 km2) is an easement with local landowners. The refuge is managed from Bowdoin National Wildlife Refuge. A court case decided that the level of the reservoir contained within the refuge would remain at a certain level to ensure habitat protection for migratory birds.
