Georgetown UniversityWebsite NYC Council: District 5 Jessica S. Lappin (b. April 25, 1975) is a Democratic New York City Councilwoman representing the 5th District of Manhattan, which includes the Upper East Side and Roosevelt Island. While serving on the Council, Lappin has focused heavily on reducing class sizes, creating new parks, and making work site construction safer in New York City.
In January 2006, Lappin was elected by her colleagues to chair the Land Use Subcommittee on Landmarks, Public Siting, and Maritime Uses[citation needed], where she currently leads Council efforts to protect the historic fabric of New York City, approve new schools, and promote safe and sensible development. She has received awards from the Friends of the Upper East Side and the Historic Districts Council for her work on preservation issues.[citation needed]
In the first half of 2008, two separate cranes collapsed within her district, killing nine people and injuring many others.[1] Following these two tragedies, Lappin proposed a package of legislative reforms to make crane operations and construction safer in New York City. She has also authored legislation aimed at greening our environment and has secured city funding for three new waterfront parks on the East Side.[citation needed]
In addition to serving on the Land Use Committee, Council Member Lappin is a member of the following Council committees: Education, Sanitation, Transportation, General Welfare, Standards & Ethics, and Oversight and Investigations.
Lappin has been mentioned as a possible candidate for New York's 14th congressional district.[2] Jessica Lappin's office is located on 63rd Street, between First and Second Avenues.
Personal life
Jessica Lappin graduated from Stuyvesant High School.[3] She earned her B.A. in Government from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa and Magna Cum Laude.[3] Lappin is married to Andrew Wuertele.[3] She gave birth to her second son Miles McMichael Wuertele on April 1, 2011.[4]
