Albert Vann is a member of the
New York City Council fromBrooklyn representing the 36th Council District, which includes parts ofBedford-Stuyvesant andCrown Heights . As an adult he enlisted in the
United States Marine Corps , where he attained the rank of sergeant before being discharged.Subsequently, he earned a
BBA from Toledo University, and Master's degrees from bothYeshiva University , andLong Island University .He has served in different capacities as a teacher and administrator in New York public schools over the course of his professional career.
Vann served as a member of the
New York State Assembly -representing the 56th District-from 1975-2001.After leaving the Assembly, Vann made a successful bid for the 36th seat on the New York City Council, which he has represented since 2001.
He is a member of
Alpha Phi Alpha , the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African Americans.Response To Sean Bell Shooting
In response to the death of
Sean Bell - apparently from the guns of NYPD officers - Albert Vann alleged that his shooting was caused by "institutional racism."
