Staff and students

As of September 2010 the district had 233 schools, including 196 elementary schools and 37 secondary schools. Of the schools, 125 (104 elementary and 21 secondary) are in Mississauga, 94 (80 elementary and 14 secondary) are in Brampton, and 14 (12 elementary and 2 secondary) are in Caledon. As of that same month, the district had 151,072 students, including 106,820 elementary students and 44,252 secondary students. The Peel district also had 14,101 employees, including 9,901 academic employees and 4,000 business employees.[3]

New schools

For the 2005-2006 school year, the Board opened 8 new schools:[1]

  1. Cheyne Middle School
  2. Rowntree Public School
  3. Oscar Peterson Public School
  4. Roberta Bondar Public School
  5. Mississauga Secondary School
  6. Mount Royal Public School
  7. Red Willow Public School
Calderstone Middle School

For the 2006-2007 school year, there are plans to open 7 new schools,[1] though details for only 6 of these are currently available on the school board's web site:

  1. Calderstone Middle School (September 2006)[4]
  2. Eagle Plains Public School (September 2006)[4]
  3. James Potter Public School (December 2006)[5]
  4. Lougheed Middle School (September 2006)[5]
  5. Thorndale Public School (September 2006)[6]
  6. Stephen Lewis Secondary School (fall 2006)[7]
  7. Erin Centre Middle School (fall 2007)

Over the next 5 years, the school board's capital plan forecasts needing to open 26 new schools to keep up with enrollment growth due to the recent baby boom.[1]

French immersion

The Peel District School Board offers a French immersion program at 19 of its elementary schools, and at three of its high schools. In addition, two other high schools have partial French immersion, and another six schools offer an extended French program.[8]

For the 2004-2005 school year, there were 5,160 elementary students (5% of the elementary student population) and 1,025 high school students (3% of the high school student population) enrolled in the French immersion program.[9]

Transportation costs to the Peel District School Board to get elementary immersion students to schools with the French immersion program amounted to an extra expense of $1.4 million per year. For the same period, provincial grants provided to the Peel District School Board by the province of Ontario for French immersion programs totalled $1.789 million.[9]

Regional Enhanced Program

The Peel District School Board runs the Regional Enhanced Program, a gifted education program, for students defined as having "an unusually advanced degree of general intellectual ability that requires differentiated learning experiences of a depth and breadth beyond those normally provided in the regular school programme to satisfy the level of educational potential indicated."[10]
