Brampton Transit (BT) is public transport bus operator for the City of Brampton in the Regional Municipality of Peel, and within the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) in Ontario, Canada. Brampton Transit began operations in 1974.

In May 2005, a major upgrade occurred that put more routes into a grid pattern. In 2006 Brampton Transit became Canada's fastest-growing transit system in terms of ridership. Over 10 million riders used Brampton Transit in 2006, marking a 12.4 percent increase over 2005 levels and shattering all previous ridership records for the city.. [http://www.city.brampton.on.ca/press/07-004.tml Brampton Transit ridership figures for 2006] ] The transit system is currently headed by Transit Director Sue Bass.

Connections

Brampton Transit is connected with Mississauga Transit to the south, and routes along main corridors serve features in both cities, such as Sheridan College (Brampton Campus), and industrial, commercial, and retail centres.

Steeles Avenue, once the boundary between the former Toronto and Chingacousy Townships, is now a major Brampton thoroughfare. The Route 11 now runs west of Shoppers World at Hurontario Street, and eastward into Toronto to Humber College's Main Campus. There is a transfer at the College with Route 50, that serves new developments in the Gore Road area near the former Highway 50, or Albion Road. In September 2007, the Section West of Shoppers World became route 51, and accesses Mississauga Transit at Mississauga Road and Meadowvale Blvd.

In addition, BT's route 77 (which is jointly operated with York Region Transit) runs along most of the former Highway 7 from Bramalea, and presently terminates in the east at Finch Bus Terminal; there it connects York Region Transit, GO Transit's bus service and with the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) at Finch subway station. During the autumn of 2005, York Region Transit's Viva bus rapid transit service began, but there has been no major change to this route, except for increased Sunday headways, from hourly to forty-five minutes.

Brampton Transit has also been a key carrier of commuters to and from the Georgetown line railway station operated by GO Transit. There are transfers to and from the trains and buses at the Bramalea, Brampton, and Mount Pleasant (opened February 2005) stations, and direct connections to express buses at Bramalea City Centre and Trinity Common, and adjacent stop at Shoppers World.

Fares

As of February 5, 2007, cash fare is $2.75 (exact change). Preschoolers and the blind travel for free.

The provincial Minister of Transportation has announced plans to introduce the Presto card, a unified smartcard-based payment system for the entire Greater Toronto Area similar to the Octopus Card used in Hong Kong.

Bus rapid transit

Brampton is currently planning a new Bus Rapid Transit system, [ [http://www.brampton.ca/transit/accel.tml Brampton Transit, AcceleRide] ] called Acceleride along Main/Hurontario and Queen Streets, which would form the backbone to its bus network. Acceleride received funding from the provincial government in 2006 to begin implementation of this system and an additional federal-municipal contribution agreement was signed in 2008.
