Early life
Matt lived in New Hampshire until the age of four until his family moved to West Springfield, Massachusetts. He has been involved with music since he was very young. He has played the piano ever since he was five years old, and picked up the clarinet in elementary school. By the time he got to junior high school, he begged his parents for a guitar and started his first band, Nameless Fear. He played in Nameless Fear from the ages of thirteen to seventeen. He eventually left to play bass guitar for the band Lost Inside a Rubix Cube (who later changed their name to The Amber Fashion). This all came about after Matt took the lead singer Adam on a date to Wendys. Matt started taking guitar lessons from the lead guitar player of All That Remains, and eventually started playing bass for the band. During his time in All That Remains, Deis co-wrote and played bass on their album This Darkened Heart. World touring with such bands as Gwar, Slipknot, As I Lay Dying, and Killswitch Engage followed.
According to Matt's personal website, he cites Rudy Sarzo, Marcus Miller, Paul McCartney, Stanley Clarke, Billy Gould, and Sting as his main influences. He also holds a degree in Music Performance from Holyoke Community College in Holyoke, Massachusetts.
CKY
In 2005, Deis jumped at the chance to be the bass player for CKY. He has since toured across America, Australia and Europe with the band. He has been a part of the writing process since joining, and according to the band's official website's frequently asked questions, "Since obtaining Matt Deis as a bassist, the rest of the band have stated that Deis will write and record on the next CKY album."
For CKY's touring set up, Deis plays ESP basses (specifically the LTD B1005), a Genz Benz GBE1200 Head, a GBE600 head, two Genz Benz XB2 4x10s, and two Genz Benz XB2 1x15s. Unlike CKY's previous live bassist, Vern Zaborowski, he does not use a pick.
It was revealed on the CKY Alliance message boards and comments on World Under Blood's MySpace (bandmate Deron Miller's active project) that Matt suffers from degenerative disc disease.[1]
At the end of May it was revealed that Matt Deis had left the band, after many rumors and hints by the band toward the outcome, with Miller explaining that he "can no longer commit to CKY ... [which] we all knew was going to happen months ago"
Matt explains later on the CKY Alliance forums: "I didn't expect all this to come out like this but yeah... I really don't have the ability to commit 100% between work and family at this point and it's very disappointing for me. My true passion is music and, in this day and age, it's really amazing that you can still make an impact through this art. Cky is the best band and I am always going to say they are my favorite band. Jess Chad Deron and Matty are geniuses. They're my friends and extended family. I really love them all. Cky also has the best fans in the world and they took me in like family."[2]
Post-CKY and personal life
Matt maintains strong ties to Western Massachusetts and in his personal twitter page refers to the area as "best-ern mass" and "Awesomeburg, USA". He is an avid supporter of the Boston Red Sox baseball team.
According to twitter posts by The Man The Myth, Deis has started tracking music for their first release. No release dates have been set nor has any record label or distribution been named.
Matt had also been recording bass guitars for another Western Massachusetts band called Mayfield, which is now named BBSD (Buynicki Buynicki Stroetzel and Deis).
It has been revealed through interviews and conversations with Deis that he is currently employed the broadband industry as a sales consultant and is working towards a degree in International Business.
