Early years
Sullivan was born in the United States but grew up in Windsor, Ontario.
Before politics
Sullivan graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1973. From February 1974 to November 1984, Sullivan worked for CBC where he was radio master control operator. Since November 1984, Sullivan has been a national representative for Communications Energy and Paperworkers where he worked with Sun Media and Torstar newspapers.
