Ryan Cleary was the editor in chief of the
Newfoundland and Labrador weekly alternative newspaper, "The Independent" until its closure in July 2008.He received his journalism training at the
College of the North Atlantic inSt. John's, NL .He won a silver Atlantic Journalism Award in 1999 for his print feature called "Welfare Roles" published in the provincial daily newspaper, "
The Telegram ."He was also nominated for a
Michener Award in 2004, along with the rest of "The Independent" staff, for an issue that evaluated howCanada has benefited from Newfoundland and Labrador joining Confederation.On 10 September 2008, Cleary won the NDP nomination in the federal riding of
