He won an All Ireland Under 21 title with Tipperary in 1989 playing at full back as Tipperary defeated Offaly in the final.[1] He made his senior championship debut in 1991 coming on as a sub against Limerick in the Munster semi final. He was again introduced as a sub in the drawn Munster final against Cork and managed to secure a corner back spot for the remainder of the year as Tipperary claimed the Munster and All Ireland titles. They defeated Kilkenny in the All Ireland final.[2]

Tipperary claimed another Munster title in 1993 but were defeated in the All Ireland semi final against Galway. Michael remained a regular in the full back line for the next number of years winning 2 National Hurling League titles in 1994 and 1999.
