Playing career

Club

O’Brien plays his club hurling with his local Éire Óg Anacarty club and in 2006 captured an intermediate county title with the club.

Inter-county

O’Brien first came to prominence on the inter-county scene as a member of the Tipperary ("Tipp") minor hurling team in the early 2000s. He won a Munster minor title in 2002, although success at All-Ireland level eluded him in that year. O’Brien was a substitute when Tipp won another Munster minor title in 2003 as well as a Munster under-21 title in 2004. Two years later in 2006 he won a Munster under-21 title on the field of play, but All-Ireland success proved elusive once again. In 2007 O’Brien made his senior debut against Dubin in the National Hurling League. The following year he was a key member of the team as Tipp won the National League outright. Later that summer O’Brien made his championship debut against Cork.

On 5 September 2010, O'Brien came on as a second half substitute as Tipperary won their 26th All Ireland title, beating reigning champions Killkenny by 4-17 to 1-18 in the final, preventing Kilkenny from achieving an historic 5-in-a-row, it was O'Briens's first All-Ireland winners medal.[1]
