Conor O’Mahony was born in Newport, County Tipperary in 1984. He was educated locally and from a young age he showed a great interest in hurling.
Playing career
Club
O’Mahony plays his club hurling with his local Newport team.
Inter-county
O’Mahony first started playing inter-county hurling with the Tipperary minor team in the early 2000s. He won a Munster minor medal at midfield in 2001, with another provincial victory coming in 2002 with O’Mahony playing at centre-forward. In 2003 he had graduated onto the Tipperary under-21 team. In the Munster final O’Mahony came on as a substitute and scored a goal against Cork in extra-time to clinch victory for Tipp. The following year he captured a second consecutive Munster under-21 medal.
O’Mahony later joined the Tipperary senior hurling panel. He made his senior debut in a National Hurling League game against Antrim in 2005, before later securing a place on the starting fifteen in the Munster Championship. Since then O’Mahony has played in three Munster finals, however, with one win.
In September 2009, O'Mahony was nominated for the 2009 All Star Team.[1] He collected his second All-Star award in October 2009 in the half back line.[2] He was also picked in the 2009 Opel hurling team of the year.[3]
On 5 September 2010, O'Mahony started at centre half-back as Tipperary won their 26th All Ireland title, beating reigning champions Killkenny by 4-17 to 1-18 in the final, preventing Kilkenny from achieving an historic 5-in-a-row, it was O'Mahony's first All-Ireland winners medal.[4]
