Malwa Express (Hindi : मालवा एक्सप्रेस, Urdu :مالوا ایکسپریس, Punjabi:ਮਾਲਵਾ ਏਕ੍ਸਪ੍ਰੇਸ ) is a daily superfast express train service which connects Indore Junction BG railway station of Indore, the largest city and commercial hub in Madhya Pradesh, to Jammu Tawi in Jammu & Kashmir, India.

The 'down' service from Indore runs as number 12919, and the 'up' service from Jammutavi carries number 12920 The name Malwa signifies the region of Madhya Pradesh where the city of Indore is located

Arrival and Departure

The timetable for early 2010 shows departure from Jammu Tawi at 9.00a.m. daily, with arrival at Indore Junction at 12.50p.m. the following day. 27 hours and 50 minutes, including 3 hours and 1 minute waiting at the 39 intermediate stations. This is an average speed of 55.3 km. per hour for the 1,540 km. journey, or 62.1 km. per hour excluding stops.

The reverse journey leaves Indore Junction at 12.25p.m. and arrives in Jammu Tavi at 3.55p.m. the following day. 27 hours and 30 minutes, including 2 hours 56 minutes waiting at the intermediate stations. This is an average speed of 56 km. per hour, or 62.7 km. per hour excluding stops.

On return journey, the train does best in Jammutawi-New Delhi section. But is horribly slow in New Delhi-Bhopal section where it gets overtaken by Karnataka express, Shan-e-Bhopal express, Rajdhani express, and sometimes even Tamilnadu express, due to which this train is not preferred.

Dewas - Ujjain, Ujjain - Bhopal, Bhopal - Bina, Bina - Jhansi - Gwalior, Gwalior - Agra, Agra - Mathura, Mathura - New Delhi and Delhi - Amritsar routes. It passes over through 7 states such as Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, New Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir. The important halts of this train are :

Trivia

  • This train was originally introduced between Indore and New Delhi and was then extended to Jammu.
  • It was the first Indian train to reach Pakistan as a diplomatic gesture. On 22 October 1985, it terminated at Lahore in Pakistan running as an Indore - Lahore Special, but the service was withdrawn after 55 days due to controversies. It ran once a week during this period, departing on Fridays in each direction.
  • It was the fifth train in India and Madhya Pradesh to get an ISO Certificate, after the Bhopal Express, Rewanchal Express and Ahilyanagari Express.
  • It is crowded throughout the year, especially on the Amritsar - New Delhi, Agra - Jhansi, Bina - Bhopal and Ujjain - Indore sections.
